The projects of El Arbol
The "El Arbol" Foundation helps to conserve nature by giving environmental education and lessons in organical agriculture. Gender and employment is stimulated through projects, aimed at assisting the most vulnerable in society, women and children, to improve their lives.
The Foundation takes care of a co-operative workshop, run by women, in Chinandega. This business is at the core of most of the projects that El Arbol finances.
Los Laureles
In 1995 a collective of female carpenters, Los Laureles, requested Saskia van Vuuren to help them to build a workshop. She also aided in financing the starting business, in co-operation with the cities of Eindhoven and Chinandega. Since 1997 the Foundation is the caretaker of Los Laureles.
The workshop in ChinandegaThe workshop has a special attention for women and the environment. The core business of Los Laureles is the production of furniture for the local market.

Los Laureles did produce school furniture for poor and disabled children and helped with the maintenance of schools, clinics and women's centers, with financial support of El Arbol.

Environment and sustainability From the beginning the foundation has worked for projects in sustainable forestry, agroforestry, organical agriculture and environmental education. We also have promoted in Nicaragua the voluntary forest certification of FSC (Forest Stewardship Council).
Disabled women
El Arbol has supported the local organisation of handicapped women from 1997 until 2004: Organizacion de las mujeres discapacitadas por un futuro sin bareras.
A ramp was made by Los Laureles for the woman's center in Chinandega to give the disabled access, with support from The Netherlands. After the hurricane Mitch 25 female victims of the organisation received a new roof.
